A sideboard, or dining room server, is the piece that makes a dining room feel finished: closed storage for everything you do not want on display, and a long top at serving height for dishes, drinks and a lamp.
Ours are built to order with solid French Oak or Kiaat tops over a painted carcass. The Drakensberg Sideboard is the widest in the range at 2,000 mm; the Midi is the same construction at 1,200 mm for a smaller room or a hallway. Both work equally well as a lounge console or a TV base if the height suits your screen. Free installation in Gauteng when you choose delivery.

Sideboards and dining room servers: a buying guide
A dining room server and a sideboard are the same piece of furniture: a long, low cabinet that stands against the dining room wall, with closed storage below and a top at serving height. Timbur makes two sideboards, the 2,000 mm Drakensberg Sideboard and the 1,200 mm Drakensberg Midi, both 830 mm high and 500 mm deep with a solid French Oak or Kiaat top, plus the 1,500 mm Haenertsburg Console and three 1,600 mm double chests that many customers use as servers. Which width?
Measure the wall and subtract room for chairs to pull out if the table sits close. A 2,000 mm sideboard suits a dining room with a six- or eight-seater table; the 1,200 mm Midi suits a smaller room, a hallway or the end of a lounge. Allow about 1,000 mm in front of the unit for drawers and doors to open while someone passes behind a chair.
Serving height and storage
At 830 mm the Drakensberg tops sit at the height of a kitchen counter, which is the comfortable height for serving from and for a lamp or a mirror above. Inside, the Drakensberg has full-extension drawers and a removable centre shelf behind the doors, so platters and tall bottles fit. The cabinets are sprayed PG Bison MDF in Satin White, Satin Light Grey, Satin Dark Grey or Flat Black; the tops are solid timber sealed so the grain shows; handles are brass or matte black and the 50 mm square legs are painted to match.
Doubling as a TV base
The Drakensberg Sideboard is wide enough for screens up to 85 inches and the Midi for screens up to 55 inches, so the same piece works in a lounge. Both are freestanding and arrive assembled; no installation is needed.
Sideboard questions, answered
What is the difference between a sideboard, a buffet and a server?
Nothing in practice. All three describe a long, low dining room cabinet with storage below and a top for serving. Timbur's Drakensberg Sideboard and Midi Sideboard are sold under one name but do all three jobs.
What sizes do Timbur sideboards come in?
The Drakensberg Sideboard is 2,000 mm wide, 500 mm deep and 830 mm high. The Drakensberg Midi is 1,200 mm wide, 500 mm deep and 830 mm high. The Haenertsburg Console is 1,500 mm wide, 440 mm deep and 780 mm high. Custom widths are often possible if you ask before ordering.
How much does a solid oak sideboard cost in South Africa?
As of November 2026, the Drakensberg Midi Sideboard is R12,995 and the Drakensberg Sideboard R15,999, each with a solid French Oak or Kiaat top. The current price is on each product page.
Is the top solid wood?
Yes. The top is solid French Oak or solid Kiaat, sealed rather than painted so the grain stays visible and marks can be sanded back. The cabinet below is sprayed MDF for stability and colour matching.
Can a sideboard be used as a TV unit?
Yes. At 2,000 mm the Drakensberg Sideboard carries screens up to 85 inches; the 1,200 mm Midi suits screens up to 55 inches. Both have closed storage for decoders and consoles.
How long does a sideboard take, and is it installed?
Every piece is handmade to order in Lanseria; the current lead time is 9 to 11 weeks including the December closure, then delivery 3 to 7 working days after manufacturing. Sideboards are freestanding and arrive assembled, so no installation is needed; delivery is quoted at checkout for anywhere in South Africa.
